Countdown to Greatness: Wrap Team Challenge

The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) is hosting its first-ever Wrap Team Competition at the 2018 SGIA Expo. The event gives installers the chance to test their wrapping speed and skills. They will compete in two-person teams and will attempt to wrap the side of a car in 20 minutes or less. PDAA Master Certified judges will evaluate their work based on speed and quality, and the top teams will advance through the three days of the Expo.

Car Wrapping DemonstrationThe competition will be held at the PDAA booth (Booth 4118). The rules are as follows:

  • Each team will have 20 minutes to wrap the side of a car.
  • Competitors will need to check in at the PDAA booth (Booth 4118) 30 minutes before their start time.
  • Each judge will individually score the side of the car based on the “Judging Criteria.”
  • The scores of each judge will be added up for a final score.
  • The decisions of the judges are final.
  • On Day 1, the half of the teams with the best scores will move onto Day 2. Following Day 2, the half of the teams with the best scores will move on to the final day. On the final day, Day 3, the top teams will compete for prizes.
  • All competitors must conduct themselves in a professional manner.
  • SGIA/PDAA is not liable for any injury.
  • SGIA will provide heat guns, knives and electricity for the heat guns. Feel free to bring your own tools if you prefer.
  • Any competitor that cuts the paint, damages the car or catches any article on fire will be disqualified from the competition.
  • Failure to abide by the rules will result in a disqualification.
  • SGIA/PDAA reserves the right to adjust these conditions at any time

PDAA Certification TestingThe first-place team will be awarded $2,000, second place $1,000 and third place $500. The competition begins on Thursday, October 18, with 24 teams competing. The lot will be narrowed to 12 teams on Friday, and then six teams will compete for the championship on the closing Saturday. Each day of the competition will use vinyl provided by the day’s sponsoring manufacturer: Arlon Graphics (day one), Ritrama (day two) and 3M (day three).

EPA Denies WA State Ecology’s Request to Reduce Allowable PCB Concentrations

On April 4, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) formally denied a request from the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) to reduce allowable inadvertent polychlorinated biphenyls (iPCBs) limits in consumer products. Recently, both the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and California have passed climate-related disclosure mandates for certain types and sizes of companies. In March of 2024, the SEC approved its final rule after almost two years since the initial proposal, while California got ahead of the game and enacted SB 253 and SB 261 in October of 2023 as part of the state’s larger Climate Accountability Package.

OSHA Walkaround Rule Allows Third Parties, Including Union Reps, At Any Worksite

The Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) has finalized one its most controversial rules about who may accompany OSHA officials during worksite inspections. The revised rule has the potential to dramatically change the dynamics associated with OSHA inspections. Due to the significant resistance by the regulated community to the proposed rule, which included PRINTING United Alliance, there is a likelihood that the rule will be challenged in federal court and may put the effective date on hold pending the outcome of the lawsuits.
